Si un ciudadano colombiano, o un visitante extranjero profesa cualquier tipo de fe religiosa, puede expresarla libremente en Colombia, ya sea en público o en privado, sin temor a que por su condición espiritual sea discriminado o perseguido, y además ese derecho está protegido por el estado, igual que cualquiera otro de los derechos fundamentales de la persona.
Se puede ser católico, protestante, musulmán, judío, budista, hare krishna, o ateo si se quiere, y manifestar su credo en cultos, ceremonias, oficios, programas de enseñanza y actividades proselitistas, porque hay en el país un sólido marco jurídico para que ello sea una realidad inquebrantable.
Estas garantías y otras que le son inherentes, son el centro de la celebración del Día Nacional de la Libertad Religiosa y de Cultos, que tiene lugar cada 4 de julio desde cuando se expidió el Decreto Presidencial 1079 de 2016, como uno de los tantos desarrollos del precepto constitucional consagrado en la Carta Fundamental de 1991, en su Artículo 19, que dice expresamente: “Se garantiza la libertad de cultos. Toda persona tiene derecho a profesar libremente su religión y a difundirla en forma individual o colectiva. Todas las confesiones religiosas e iglesias son igualmente libres ante la ley”.
